AMLO witnesses signing of agreement between US-Mexico CEOs in Mérida, Yucatán

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador visited the state of Yucatan for the second time since he took office on December 1st, 2018.

The president arrived in Merida to be an honorable witness of the signing of the Agreement between the Private Sectors of Mexico and the United States, within the framework of the US-Mexico CEO Dialogue Business Summit, which brings together leading businessmen and high-level public officials from Mexico and the United States.

This important Business Summit is intended to defuse U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to close the US – Mexico border.

AMLO, Marcelo Ebrard México Secretary of Foreign Relations and Graciela Márquez Colín, Mexico’s Economy Secretary met with investors and top business representatives from both Mexico and the United States. And during the event, executives from both countries signed a private-sector agreement.

Meanwhile, Carlos Salazar Lomelín, President of Mexico’s Business Coordination Council stated during the US México CEO DIALOGUE Business Summit that investment without corruption, is the key to fight poverty in our country.

Larry Fink, chief executive of the world’s largest asset manager, BlackRock Inc., said that Mexico and the United States had been business partners for a long time, and that this relationship should prevail. He also said that the US-Mexico border can not be shut down, cause that would be a great mistake.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said during his intervention:”in the association that should be sought between the public and private sectors, we must also include the social sector as well, farmers, workers, environmentalists, cooperativists, among others, to consolidate partnerships among the three sectors”.

The purpose of this agreement is to strengthen economic and commercial ties between both countries, as well as to indicate the priorities of AMLO’s administration in matters of trade and investment, related to the free trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

AMLO stated: “I agree with the terms of this declaration, my administration commits to enforce an authentic rule of law, to respect the commitments that were established for the approval of the Free Trade Agreement, to promote the economic development the Southeast of our country and the Central American countries so that migration can be optional and not forced due to lack of opportunities or violence”.

Finally, the Mexican President thanked President Donald Trump for being open to discuss trade and immigration issues.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador witnessed the signing of this agreement between Mexico and the United States, represented by Graciela Márquez Colín, Mexico’s Economy Secretary, and Wilbur Ross, U.S. Commerce Secretary. The ceremony took take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Merida on Friday, April 12, 2019.
