Mérida is ready to host the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates

A wide range of activities will take place in Yucatan on the occasion of the “World Summit” of Nobel Peace Prize winners, to be held from 19 to 22 September.

Mauricio Vila Dosal, governor of Yucatan said: “The central axis of this summit is the construction of global peace from the local, specifically the idea that not only large institutions, organizations or national governments can make an effective contribution to global peace but, in accordance with the trends of the 21st century, this construction of tranquility and harmony can be made from the local, from our families and our everyday activity. Every day, all united and in all possible ways, especially from our personal contribution,”

30 Peace Nobel Prize laureates have been confirmed, including: Lech Walesa, former president of Poland; Juan Manuel Santos, former president of Colombia; Frederik Willem de Klerk, former president of South Africa; José Ramos-Horta, former president of East Timor; as well as activists Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Jody Williams; Lord David Trimble; Shirin Ebadi, Tawakkol Karman, Leymah Gbowee and Kailash Satyarthi.

Recipient organizations such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Martin Luther King Center and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will also participate.

Thematic forums will also be organized with the participation of singer Miguel Bosé, actor Diego Luna and ex-football player Rafael Márquez, among others.

Events schedule

On September 21 the concert “Yucatan for Peace”, will be held in the “Monumento a la Patria” and will feature Puerto Rican recording artist Ricky Martin.

This event will not represent any cost to the state government.

The program starts on Thursday September 19th with the official inauguration presided by the State Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard .

It is also estimated that president Andrés Manuel López Obrador will arrive to Mérida on Thursday September 19th, during the afternoon, to have a private dinner with local authorities and laureates.
