The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, assured that if Donald Trump imposes 25% tariffs on Mexico, as he promised in his presidential campaign, then the Mexican government will also do the same, which could trigger an inflationary increase.

During a radio interview with López Dóriga on Radio Fórmula, the official indicated that if the United States imposes that quota on the country, the cost will be very high for its economy because Mexico is its main commercial partner.

“If you apply the 25% tariff to me, I have to react with tariffs, and I am your main importer along with Canada, so if you put tariffs, we will also put tariffs,” he explained.

Ebrard said that despite Trump’s threat, the Mexican government has the conditions to play in favor and negotiate during the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC), which will take place in 2026.

He even explained that if the US imposes a 25% tariff on Mexican exports, the first impact will be that inflation would rise. “The imports from the United States concerning Mexico are so large that it would affect not only the automotive industry but many others,” he said.

Ebrard says there is no Chinese automotive brand produced in the country
Questioned about the Chinese automotive brands in the country, the head of the Economy highlighted that no vehicle of this type is produced in Mexico and that the only plant that produces these vehicles from the Asian country is located in Pasadena, California, where they produce cargo trucks.

“There is no plant in Mexico to this day of some of the Chinese brands,” he said.

In this regard, he indicated that the issue is more of a competition regarding the technological content of the vehicles, which is why each brand fights to have better components to attract more buyers.

“What we have to do with the United States, is to ally with all the brands that are in Mexico is to make a common plan to be more competitive,” Marcelo Ebrard concluded.
