Convention Tourism strengthens Guanajuato’s economy

In the last four years, 54 new hotels have opened and 30 more are under construction in the state of Guanajuato, with a total of 8,000 new rooms along the state.

During an official presentation offered at the IBTM Latin America, which took place at Banamex Center in Mexico City, the Tourism Secretary of Guanajuato, Fernando Olivera Rocha announced diverse investments in the Tourism Industry that are contributing to develop the state’s economy. For example, in 2018 the projection is to close the year with 10,000 hotel rooms and more than 9 billion pesos (473.7 million USD) in investment.

Olivera Rocha also said that “The Business Tourism in Guanajuato represents around 12% of gross domestic product in the state with an economic impact of 75 billion pesos (3.9 billion USD)”.

Olivera pointed out that the most important travel destinations are Celaya, Guanajuato, Irapuato, Leon, San Miguel de Allende and Salamanca.

In the particular case of San Miguel de Allende, private investments have backed the development of Meetings, Congress and Convention Tourism along the state, in order to motivate more business visits, increasing the number of hotel rooms, visitors and positioning the city as a world class tourism destination.

Finally, the Secretary stated that Meetings and Conventions Tourism hotel occupancy has increased 7%, resulting in a 30% increase in the number of visitors.
