LEÓN, Gto.- On Saturday December 10, the third edition of the “Festival de la Calle”  kicked off in León, Guanajuato. During the festival, several artistic activities take place at different venues, such as dance, theater, music, visual arts and extreme sports.

The celebration seeks to keep the young people of León away from delinquency, especially those who live in the neighborhoods with a higher crime index.

“This project has the purpose of bringing art to all people. When they discover how easy and fun it is to learn and enjoy music, theater, dance, sports, etc.; then, youth and children can see art as a hobby, and some of them even as a possible profession or trade, ” said the Director of the Festival, Jonathan Devars.

The festival will be held from Saturday 10 to Saturday 17 December, and for 8 days it will offer free recreational activities in some of the neighborhoods with more criminal incidence, such as “Las Hilamas”, “Lomas de Echeveste”, “Villas de San Juan”, “Manzanares”, “María Dolores”, “San Francisco de Asís”, and “Obrera”, with the festival ending activities at the  “Niños Héroes” garden.

At the same time, local musical bands of different genres will be doing feature presentations. “The objective is the prevention of violence and crime, because we are convinced that art and sports are the best tools to keep young people away from negative thoughts, and help to rebuild our social structure,” Devars added.

Many sponsors and municipal agencies are contributing for the realization of this even, such as the Municipal Sports Commission (Comisión Municipal del Deporte), Cultural Institute of León (Instituto Cultural de León), Social and Human Development Department (Departamento de Desarrollo Social y Humano), Direction of Crime Prevention (Dirección de Prevención del Delito), among others.

More than 2 thousand young people are expected to participate in these activities, in an inclusive way, during the 8 days that the “Festival de la Calle” lasts.
