International Award Winning Author Sandra Cisneros will read from her latest book, A House of My Own, Friday, February 3, at 6:30 p.m. at Bellas Artes Auditorium, upstairs at Hernandez Macias 75, at this Amistad Canada Presents An Evening with Sandra Cisneros, a benefit for Jovenes Adealnte. She will read from the chapter entitled Mi Casa Es Su Casa, and her theme will be Bridges in Times of Walls. Liliana Valenzuela will read the same passages in Spanish. Mayor Ricardo Villarreal will make introductory statements.

From Chicago to Mexico, the places Cisneros has lived have provided inspiration for her now-classic works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. At this exclusive event, Cisneros will share transformative memories and reveal her artistic and intellectual influences as she reads from her new book, A House of My Own. Her lyrical style comes across in as beautifully in her voice as it does on paper in this autobiographical collection of essays spanning several decades. She will read in English and Liliana Valenzuela will read in Spanish.

“I’m not a good traveler, but part of my job is to take the stories out there to those who need to hear them. I do enjoy meeting my readers and seeing new places, and I especially enjoy performing my work,” said Cisneros.

Cisneros won the 2016 PEN Creative Nonfiction Award for A House of My Own and was awarded the highest honor given to artists and art patrons by the U.S. government, the National Medal of Arts & Humanities, “for enriching the American narrative through her novels, short stories and poetry as she explores issues of race class and gender through the lives of ordinary people straddling multiple cultures.”
