LEÓN, Gto .- Victor Manuel Román Flores, President of the National Chamber of Commerce (Cámara Nacional del Comercio, Canaco) of León, Guanajuato; died on Sunday February 12, due to a heart attack during his participation in the 61st edition of the traditional “Carrera de los Barrios” race.
The race started at 8 am on “Arco la Calzada”, Román Flores registered for the distance of half marathon (21 kilometers); however, 20 minutes into the race, the businessman fell to the ground.
Almost immediately an ambulance arrived onsite to provide the runner with medical assistance, and he was rushed to “Aranda Hospital”, where he arrived unconscious but still showing vital signs, according to the hospital report.
“It seems like he had a major heart attack, due to the magnitude of the effort made,” said cardiologist José Luis Moreno Ávila.
Moreno Ávila continued, “He was still alive on arrival to the hospital”. Later on, hospital personnel confirmed to the “Carrera de los Barrios” organizing committee that Mr. Román had passed away.
The man was a regular runner in all kinds of distances, even marathons and ultramarathons, including in international races. Last year, the business leader participated in the New York Marathon, one of the most important in the world.
