SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE – On Jan. 31, a total of one thousand ecological stoves (so-called “ecostufas”) were delivered to residents of rural areas near San Miguel de Allende, with an investment of 3 million pesos (139.5 thousand USD).
The delivery of this kind of stoves along the state of Guanajuato is part of the “Improvement to Housing” (Mejoramiento a la Vivienda) program, under the responsibility of the Directorate of Social and Human Development (Dirección de Desarrollo Social y Humano).
During the event, the “ecostufas” were delivered to low-income population by state authorities, at the premises of the Municipal Commission of Sport (Comisión Municipal del Deporte, Comude).
Ricardo Villarreal, Mayor of San Miguel de Allende, emphasized that, the purpose of this ecological project is to improve the housewives’ health, reducing the consumption of firewood and protecting the environment.
The “ecostufa” is the result of a detailed analysis, and focused on replacing the use of open cookers in Mexico’s rural communities.
At the end of 2010, “Manufacturas Especializadas Metálicas para la Industria de la Construcción” began this project, through new ideas and experiments that began to take shape, and finally resulting in the creation of the “ecostufa” .
After several tests, a specialized group came up with a prototype of the “ecostufa”, which fulfills the specifications required by SEDESOL, the National Polytechnic Institute and the San Miguel’s Institute of Ecology.
After these institutions approved the prototype, the ecological group started with the production of these type of stoves.
