San Miguel de Allende, the beautiful and cozy town in central México, went through an ascending spiral of violence during the month of May, leaving 9 dead in one of the cities that has been placed in the eyes of the whole world, but also, and it is now portrayed by news websites in New Zealand and major American media such as ABC News, as a city where a “fierce drug war” is taking place.
On May 3rd, a criminal group opened fire at a house located on “Antonio Quero” street in the neighborhood of “Santa Cecilia”, where a big caliber bullet went through the wall and killed a 7-year-old boy in the room next door.
On Saturday May 6th, an explosion took place at kilometer 55 on the San Miguel de Allende-Dolores Hidalgo highway, where a 30-year-old man, aboard on a white pickup truck, was murdered by another group of criminals.
On the same date, another man was killed on “Ignacio Allende” street in the neighborhood of “San Rafael”, he was allegedly shot by two unidentified men minutes after 9 a.m., he tried to run to an iron-shop near by, and finally received 9 gunshots in front of that business.
At 9:34 am the Emergency System 911 received a report on the incident. A Red Cross ambulance arrived on site an took the injured man to the General Hospital, where Francisco Javier died while undergoing surgery on Sunday May 7.
According to information from the Public Ministry, at 10:00 a.m. on May 12, the remains of a man was found on the undergrowth at the side of the cobblestone road that leads to the neighborhood of “Atascadero”, the forensic services (SEMEFO) along with specialists arrived on site to pick the remains, gather up evidence and carry out the proper investigation.
After the autopsy, it was determined that the man died due to a gunshot in the chest, the report established that the young man was from Querétaro.
On the early morning hours of Sunday May 21, one person died and three other resulted injured during a shooting close to “La Conspiración” boulevard, in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende
Allegedly a group of four criminals ambushed Abraham Vásquez aka “El padre”, who was executed and died instantly, another person was seriously injured, while two teenage girls 15 and a 17-year-old respectively, received several gunshots, resulting with serious injuries.
On the night of Wednesday May 24, four people were brutally murdered and one more resulted with severe injuries during an intense gunfire attack on the San Miguel de Allende – Celaya highway, near the “Express Nieto” gas station.
Law enforcement officers instantly arrived on site, where four taxis were ambushed and four people resulted dead,
Mayor Ricardo Villarreal said that while the investigation into the slayings was continuing, the bloodshed appeared to be a “score settling” within the world of street-level drug sales.
Villarreal said in an interview with Radio Formula on Thursday that because San Miguel is a tourist destination, it is prone to small-scale drug sales.
