Raúl Escobar Poblete, known as “Comandante Emilio“, who has been accused for the homicide of a Senator of the Republic of Chile, and was on the list of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, was arrested in San Miguel de Allende where he was permanently residing.
On May 30, Federal and state police officers arrested him, along with members of a criminal group that kidnapped a foreign women in San Miguel, as reported San Miguel Times.
In Mexico, Escobar Poblete changed his name for Ramón Alberto Guevara Valencia, and he held false identification documents.
Chilean newspapers cover “Commander Emilio” detention, mention San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, and confirm that the man who escaped after executing Senator Jaime Guzmán Errázuriz after shooting him 47 times.
Commander Emilio was taken to the maximum security prison of Guanajuato (Cereso Mil) where he awaits the extradition request in order to be taken to his country of origin.
He was arrested on March 30, when a taxi driver reported that someone was following him after asking him to take a “package” to the hotel Nirvana.
The driver’s report made the man’s arrest possible, as Municipal Police officers ended up capturing the man who was a resident of “Calle del Agua” in the neighborhood of “Los Arcos” in SMA.
A release by the PGR informed that the arrested man was wanted by international authorities for homicide in the first degree.
“Emilio” said that he was from México, but his accent exposed him before the authorities; after a couple of expert reports confirm that he is Chilean and when his fingerprints were sent to Santiago de Chile, they found out he was a terrorist and murderer.
The newspaper “La Tercera de Chile” reported: “Mexican authorities verified the identity of “Commander Emilio”, who is accused of being the material and intelectual author of the assassination of Senator Jaime Guzmán (UDI), in 1991, and who also has a warrant pending in our country for violation of the Antiterrorist Law for robberies and illicit association”.
“The Chilean man was wanted by the General Secretariat of Interpol, and was sought in more than 190 countries”, informed the Office of the Attorney General of Mexico (PGR), through a press release.
The PGR has conducted the issue with absolute confidentiality, because they are investigating the possible link of Escobar with a criminal group that would have committed a series of crimes in the state of Guanajuato.
Mexican police were also looking for Marcela Mardones, Escobar’s partner, who left Mexico on June 2 and toured several countries before arriving on Puerto Montt in Chile, where she was allegedly detianed by Chilean authorities.
