The following is a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City on Tuesday, October 17.

A  U.S. delegation, led by U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson, Department of State Deputy Assistance Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs John Creamer and Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Michael Dougherty, met with Mexico’s delegation, led by Eugenio Imaz Gispert, Director of Mexico’s Center for Investigation and National Security, to review our security cooperation agenda as part of the strategic partnership between our countries.  This meeting follows up on our May 18 “Strategic Dialogue on Disrupting Transnational Criminal Organizations,” which was co-chaired on the U.S. side by Secretary of State Tillerson and then-Secretary of Homeland Security Kelly.

At today’s meeting, we reviewed the significant progress our countries have made as a result of our security cooperation, including joint efforts to weaken the networks of transnational criminal organizations.  We discussed our common vision for counternarcotics efforts, particularly increasing actions to stem poppy cultivation, heroin production, and combat the movement of fentanyl and other illicit opioids, while reducing demand for these illicit drugs in the United States.  We discussed our continued efforts to enhance border security, and ways we are working jointly to deny transnational criminals revenue, combat money laundering, human smuggling, and human trafficking.

We will continue these important efforts as we prepare for the next meeting of the cabinet-level “Strategic Dialogue on Disrupting TCOs” later this year.
