Pénjamo, Guanajuato.- After 12 hours of rescue operation, emergency services personnel finally managed to rescue little Abraham Gutiérrez Salazar, a two-year-old boy who fell into a well 8 meters (22 feet) deep in the community known as “Buenos Aires” in the municipality of Pénjamo, Guanajuato.
Once stabilized, Abraham was transferred to a private clinic for medical attention.
The accident occurred shortly before 10 am on Sunday when local residents reported to the 911 Emergency System about a child who accidentally fell into a well 8 meters deep and and only 16 inches in diameter .
The event generated a strong mobilization of emergency staff: Firefighters from Pénjamo, Abasolo and Santa Ana Pacueco; Paramedics of the Red Cross and the Emergency System of the State of Guanajuato (SUEG), as well as agents of Grupo USAR Guanajuato.
It was necessary to make a vertical excavation right next to the well with a dredger, in a parallel line by the hole where Abraham fell.
Rescuers kept the little boy alive by supplying him liquids through a small hose and also, injecting oxygen through another conduit to prevent him from suffocating.
Footage showed that the little boy’s body was sunk almost 40 centimeters in a thick layer of mud at the bottom of the well. This situation required a double effort to rescue the child.
The operation lasted until 22:12 hours Sunday Feb. 25, when rescuers were finally able to enter through a horizontal tunnel that they built to communicate the well with the excavation made for the rescue.
