This year, Campeche will present its International Jazz Festival (IJF) for the 19th time, from July 26 to 29, in the Historic Center and the Campeche XXI International Convention and Exhibition Center, with the feature presentations of world renown musicians such as Nathan East, Eddie Gómez, Jane Monheit and many more. All the shows are free admission.
The Festival will begin on July 26, at 9:00 p.m., with the New Orleans Spice Brass Band parade, marching along the Calle 59 tourist corridor from the Puerta de Tierra to the Puerta de Mar, emblematic symbols of the Historic Center and which frame this beautiful heritage city.
On July 27, the IJF will move to the Campeche XXI Convention and Exhibition Center to start at 8:00 p.m. with the show of the Alejandro Campos Quartet. Campos is a great saxophonist who has studied in jazz schools in New York and has shared stage with the groups Sacbé and Astillero, Héctor Infanzón, Nacha Guevara, Enrique Neri and Armando Manzanero, among many others.
On the same night, singer Jane Monheit, who in the words of the New York Times has “a voice of phenomenal beauty” will take on the stage. Her music wanders between the bluegrass, folk and acoustic blues; and she has collaborated with artists of international level as Ivan Lins, who was honored in the 2017 edition of this IJF. In addition Monheit enlists collaborations with Sérgio Mendez and Toots Thielemans. She has been internationally recognized for her creations and performances that have kept her at number 1 on the Jazz Billboard.
On Saturday, July 28, the musical repertoire will change, with the interpretations of the Quartet of Eduardo Piastro, Mexican musician, promoter and interpreter, founder of the Astillero and Assembly projects. He has collaborated on projects with Symphony Orchestras, and Mexican artists such as Tania Libertad, Eugenia León, Betsy Pecanins, Hernaldo Zúñiga and Lila Downs.
The concert by Piastro will feature the presentation of Nathan East, an honored artist of this edition who is recognized in all areas of jazz, founding member of the contemporary jazz group Fourplay; and who has collaborated with legendary musicians such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Barbara Streisand and Stevie Wonder.
His signature bass and rhythm lines, awarded with the Grammy, have been the backdrop to a variety of popular Pop, Rock and R & B artists such as Stevie Wonder, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Buble, BB King, George Harrison, Whitney Houston , Barbara Streisand, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, Lionel Ritchie, and Andrea Bocelli, just to name a few.
Xamán, a group from southeast of Mexico, will be performing on Sunday July 29, offering a wide musical proposal that mixes Latin rhythms, polymerized with elements of folk music, Rock and Jazz.
The Festival will close with the Puerto Rican Eddie Gómez, legendary bassist and winner of two Grammy awards, who has been at the forefront of Jazz music for more than four decades. His impressive resume includes performances with Jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman.
Eddie’s unique sound and style can be heard on many Grammy-winning albums, as well as on hundreds of recordings spanning the worlds of Classic Jazz, Latin Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Pop and contemporary music.
Finally, the Ministry of Culture of the State Government (SECULT) invites the public to attend this 19th Edition of the Campeche International Jazz Festival, which in each edition has the best and most renowned exponents of the genre.
