The municipal president of San Miguel de Allende, Luis Alberto Villarreal, along artisans, indigenous people, and artists who give the small town of Guanajuato a sense of identity, signed the formal appointment of San Miguel de Allende as “The American Capital of Culture 2019.”

The choice of San Miguel de Allende as a cultural icon in the American continent was announced last August by the International Bureau of Cultural Capital in Catalonia, Spain.

According to the chairman of the Bureau, Xavier Tudela, the appointment was made for three reasons: “The quality of the submission project; the institutional consensus surrounding the candidacy, and our vow to make our Capital of Culture event a project for social inclusion and an instrument for economic development.”

With this appointment, Mexico has positioned itself as the country with the most American Capitals of Culture: Mérida (2000), Guadalajara (2005), Colima (2014), Mérida (2017), and San Miguel de Allende (2019), followed by Brazil, which has won four appointments.
