CELAYA, Gto. (OEM-Informex) .- Two Celaya artisans from the community of Ojo Seco, Jinna Herrera and her mother Guadalupe Martínez obtained the first place in the XXII State Contest for the Artisanal Creativity Award 2018.
During the state competition the best crafts of different categories were awarded, so in the category of Craftsman, producer and / or artisan collaborations, the Celayenses obtained the first place with her “rag dolls” designs.
“This year for the first time we participated with rag dolls that are traditional from Celaya and that we continue making in the only workshop that is left here in the municipality that manufactures these type of traditional dolls,” said Jinna Herrera.
“We were also present at the “Doll Fair” in Querétaro, where we also went to represent the state of Guanjuato and specifically the municipality of Celaya,” she continued.
Jinna stressed that this type of toys have more than 100 years of tradition in the municipality and that they were used to be made in several parts of the state. However, she also commented that over the years, the new generations in the communities of the region have become less interested in making this type of handmade toys, so the tradition is being lost.
“Many of the people who made them have already passed away and their descendants have not continued manufacturing these dolls, so that’s why we want continue making them, because it is tradition and because we want people to know about the popular toys of Celaya,” said Jinna.
“Right now we have 14 different types of doll making techniques, we make rag, cardboard and wax with rags that are very old techniques”, she added.
The winning pieces of the XXII State Contest for the Artisanal Creativity Award 2018 will be on display until next Sunday, December 2 at the Casa de las Artesanías, located in Plaza de la Paz in the historic center of Guanajuato capital.
