Donald Trump, President of the United States, threatened the Mexican government, headed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to “take away the country’s certification”, as according to him, Mexico has not complied with the international commitments to effectively combat drug trafficking.

The lack of this certification would put Mexico on a list conformed by Venezuela and Bolivia, among others.

Trup declared: “we need the Government of Mexico to intensify its efforts to increase the eradication of opium poppy seizures, drug trafficker’s judicial processes and confiscation of assets, and we demand a comprehensive drug control strategy”.

In a memo sent to the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, the US President identified 22 nations, mainly Latin American and Caribbean, as large producers or platforms for drug trafficking.

He also acknowledged that Mexico’s cooperation is essential to reduce the production and distribution of drugs, such as heroin and fentanyl.
