Health Services organizations in Mexico are fighting a great battle to ensure that their healthcare providers provide the highest quality continuous medical care. This is often due to the lack of basic training and the lack of opportunities for continuing medical education, especially in the most marginalized areas of the country.
As in many places in the world, the General Practitioner in Mexico receives only five years of academic training, one year of internship and one year of social service in communities. When comparing areas of southern Mexico with the rest of the country, we find that there are fewer specialists available involved in health care and other health areas such as nursing. In addition, as one moves farther from medical centers, the knowledge gap widens, the quality and standards of care are further degraded due to limited infrastructure and isolation.
