San Miguel de Allende, Gto., October 29, 2020.- As part of the activities related to the celebration of the Day of the Dead, the Directorate of Culture and Traditions inaugurated the exhibition of Monumental Alebrijes in the section from Salida Real to Querétaro and Bulevar de la Conspiración (Del Llano and Santo Domingo streets).
There are 12 colorful pieces that allude to fantasy beings that, according to Mexican traditions, are creatures that guide and protect the deceased on their “way to heaven.”
Alebrijes are originally from the Mexican state of Oaxaca. They are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. It could be a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, a lion with an eagle head, and all of them are part of the creator’s imagination.
On behalf of the municipal president, Luis Alberto Villarreal García, the councilor Luz María Gutiérrez recognized the hard work of the Culture department to offer shows like this that the whole family can enjoy, since they are “magical figures full of color” that attract children and youth.
For her part, the director of Culture and Traditions, Paulina Cadena, invited San Miguel residents to take advantage of the opportunity to see these fantastic beings on their way through the boulevard. “They are outdoor activities for people to circulate and see without the risk of generating conglomerations,” he said.
These original pieces from Oaxaca and Mexico City will be on display until the first fortnight of February 2021, residents of San Miguel and visitors will be able to appreciate the figures created, mainly by Miguel and Ricardo Linares, son and grandson of Pedro Linares López, considered the creator and father of Los Alebrijes.
