Mexico Desconocido Magazine awards the best Mexican tourism destinations in the 46th annual Tourism Market
Acapulco, Guerrero. The “Mexico Desconocido” awards took place during the celebration of the annual tourism market 2022, where San Miguel de Allende was recognized as the best wedding destination in all of Mexico.
The mayor of San Miguel, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, received the recognition which was handed by the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, as the song “Caminos de Guanajuato” was playing in the background.
The “Mexico Desconocido” awards recognize the top tourism destinations in the country based on 16 categories according to tourist experiences and travel industry experts.
The opening of the ceremony was led by dancers, musicians, and prehispanic instruments- that filled the air with Mexican folklore.
An achievement that was enticed
In an interview, the mayor of San Miguel de Allende- Mauricio Trejo Pureco stated that this recognition is the outcome of the strategies that were set in October 2021 and that the goal is to provide an excellent service for this industry.
“ Weddings, which was an economy-boosting project, has been a total success. For this year we are expecting over 700 weddings and over 600 already reserved for 2023, generating an important revenue that benefits all involved directly and indirectly in this industry”, informed the official.
He also recognized the discipline and dedication of tourist service providers regarding working hours and public space usage.
The mayor stated that weddings in San Miguel are successful not only because of the scenery and the “Callejoneadas” but because of the amazing people of this important travel destination.
Finally, he enticed couples to get married in San Miguel de Allende, and added that “Whoever gets married in San Miguel, remains married forever”.
It is the first time San Miguel de Allende receives this award, although it is already recognized as a “Magical Town” and world heritage, the town had already been awarded in different categories.
Special Recognitions
Acapulco and Nayarit received recognition for their efforts in the tourism industry.
Being an example of regenerative tourism, “Finca Argovia” in Chiapas was also awarded special recognition. Pase was also awarded for “ Boosting the economic reactivation of highways”, and Maricarmen Dominguez received a special award for 25 years in “Mexico Desconocido” which was handed by the secretary for tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués.

- Best magic town for an adventure getaway: Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila.
- Best wedding destination: San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.
- Best wildlife experience: The Monarch butterflies in Michoacán
- Best extreme sport experience: Surfing in Nayarit.
