Mexico seeks to promote this sector in recent years as it is positioned as a highly profitable area for the country
In Mexico, health tourism has increasingly established itself as a relevant sector with potential. According to authorities on the subject, millions of people around the world travel to other countries to seek medical attention or some type of health well-being.
According to the Medical Tourism Association , health tourism represents an economic benefit of 100,000 million dollars , with an annual growth rate of 25%, therefore, according to the country’s authorities, it could become a highly profitable sector. .
Added to this is the fact that between 1,400,000 and 3 million foreigners have been or are being treated in our country, according to data from Patients Beyond Borders . This positions Mexico as the second place worldwide in Medical Tourism, after Thailand.
The elderly population will soon increase in Europe and North America , so it is expected that medical services will increase in Latin America and South Asia. The countries that compete for this market are: Cuba, Costa Rica, India, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Turkey, Malaysia, the United States and Mexico.
Competitive advantages of Mexico
Regarding services and health care, our country presents some positive factors that can attract the attention of foreigners to attend to their health problems, since it has state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics , tourist infrastructure, geographical proximity , price, quality , warmth and professionalism.
Some of the specialties that are most in demand by foreign tourists in terms of health, within the country, are: cardiology, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, dentistry and oncology since they are between 40 and 80% cheaper than in the United States, which is where more tourists are attracted.
In plastic surgery , a boom has been unleashed in recent years and it is considered a sector with the possibility of becoming the first power. In previous years, Mexico was already among the five with the highest demand for this type of care, which, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery , has the potential to excel.
Among the tourist destinations for medical services that attract the most tourists in the country are: Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Mexico City.
Wellness Tourism
This sector focuses mainly on alternative medicine and healthy practices such as yoga, or spiritual rituals, temazcales, spas, and retirement homes. During the last two years these activities have been a focus of attraction for tourism.
In 2018 , this tourism represented a spill of 17,900 million dollars in Mexico. 65% of wellness tourism corresponds to domestic tourism. In addition, it was pointed out that international tourists spend an average of 61% more than regular tourists.
