Some Chilean common names of birds are familiar to us in the US and the Yucatan Peninsula such as harrier, pipit, meadowlark, ibis, goose, and sparrow. Of course plumage colors vary; others are the same. Sometimes the common names are not the same genus such as the meadowlark in South America is Leistes but Sturnella for the Eastern Meadowlark in the US and Yucatan.
But what struck me as wonderfully different were the names varying from cinclodes to earthcreeper. Those fascinating names I discovered in a guide book before my trip and I never expected to see them nor photograph them. But I did, so check them out.
By the way, “austral” implies southern or Southern Hemisphere.
Delight in these few examples from Patagonia, Chile, part 2.
And hope you enjoyed a brief introduction of these avian species living near the bottom of the earth!
