The Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, highlighted that, in the first seven months of 2024, 35.2 million tourists to hotel rooms were national, and 13.7 million were foreign.
He reported that, during this period, hotel occupancy reached 60.2% in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur, with 52.8% in city destinations and 68.3% in beach destinations.
He highlighted that from 2019 to 2023, 87 thousand new hotel rooms were built, and according to estimates, this year the number will exceed 900 thousand rooms in 25 thousand lodging establishments.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) reported that, from January to July of this year, cities registered 27.6 million tourists in hotel rooms, while beach centers received 21.3 million tourists in hotel rooms.
He indicated that, in this period, hotel occupancy reached 60.2% in the total of the monitored centers, while, in city destinations, 52.8% was recorded, which concerning the 52.2% recorded in the same period of 2023, means an increase of 0.7 percentage points, while, for beach centers, the occupancy level was 68.3%.
He pointed out that, from January to July 2024, the tourist centers that stand out for hotel occupancy are: Playacar at 89%, Akumal at 81.6%, Cabo San Lucas at 80.3%, Nuevo Nayarit at 80.2%, Cancun at 77.2%, and Puerto Vallarta with 73.9% being the destinations with the highest levels of occupancy.
Torruco Marqués pointed out that, in contrast, the extremes with the highest occupancy are the Fully Planned Centers with 74.9%, and the cities in the interior with 48%.
In the first seven months of this year, the average number of occupied rooms reached a level of 263,234 units, which is, 0.3% more than the same period of the previous year.
For beach centers, 141,519 average occupied rooms were registered, while in city destinations, the number of occupied rooms was 121,715, which represents an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2023.
In turn, from January to July 2024, the average number of available rooms reached a level of 437,396 units, which is, 0.3% more than the same period of the previous year.
The Secretary of Tourism stressed that, in this same period, beach resorts registered an average of 207,062 available rooms, while in the same period of 2023, there were 207,095, maintaining the same percentage variation compared to the same period of the previous year.
During this period, for city destinations, the average number of available rooms was 230,334, which represents a growth of 0.6% compared to January 2023.
Torruco Marqués pointed out that the hotel industry is the backbone of tourism activity, and added that from 2019 to 2023, 87 thousand new hotel rooms were registered in the country, which, added to the existing ones, gave a total of 895 thousand rooms, according to estimates, this year will exceed 900 rooms in 25 thousand lodging establishments, strengthening Mexico in the seventh position worldwide in hotel infrastructure in the different destinations of the country; which translates into economic spillover and benefits to the local population.
