More than 50 homicides in Celaya since the National Guard and the Sedena took over 15 days ago

Since the National Guard and the Sedena took over, 51 murders have been recorded and at least 20 people have been injured.

Celaya, Guanajuato.- 15 days ago, federal forces took over security in Celaya, but armed attacks continue. 51 murders have been recorded and at least 20 people have been injured.

On Wednesday, August 21, the presence of the Mexican Army and the National Guard was recorded in the city center and the Municipal Presidency. The federal forces parked their units between the passages of the garden, which caused excitement among the citizens.

The mayor, Javier Mendoza Márquez, met with General Covarrubias, Francisco Javier Zubía, and General Rogelio García of the Sedena and the National Guard. After uncertainty and speculation, municipal authorities reported that it was a weapons and explosives inspection, in an operation known as Trueno (Thunder).

Peace only lasted two and a half days until the murder of a man in Celaya`s Ejidal neighborhood and, almost simultaneously, the attack on a law office in Álvaro Obregón, near the corner of Aguilar and Maya. Armed men entered the building, threw a Molotov cocktail, and shot the lawyer Jacob Alejandro “N”, who was part of the new administration in the municipality of Cortazar. Jacob suffered bullet wounds and burns. A woman was injured by burns.

On Tuesday, August 27, in downtown Celaya, there was an attack on two jewelry stores known as “Alcántara”, where 4 people were murdered and 5 were injured. The attack occurred a few meters from the door of the Municipal Presidency, and there were no arrests.

On average, the 911 emergency system receives between 800 and 1000 calls a day. The news outlet Periódico Correo reported that more than a thousand calls were received on Sunday, September 1, 895 on Monday, September 2, and more than 900 calls were received on Tuesday, September 3.
