On Sunday September 24, a person was shot dead right on the beach in front of the Fiesta Americana Hotel in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he died hours later, so the Public Prosecutor’s Office opened the investigation file 326/2017, against those responsible.
The victim was identified as Bruno M.M., a 25-year-old street vendor who according to information from Diario de Yucatan, received multiple gunshots, including one in the head.
According to Noticaribe, the incident was allegedly a fight between street merchants, that took place on the beach near the Paradisus Hotel.
Although the injured man was transferred to the General Hospital, he was officially pronounced dead at one in the morning, on Monday September 25.
Five people were arrested in relation to this incident, two at a short distance from the scene, at Playa Ballenas, at kilometer 14 of the Hotel Zone; three more suspects who were carrying guns, were detained by police officers at an inspection point next to Plaza Coral Negro.
The Riviera Maya Times editor received a message via Facebook from a Travel Agent in Los Angeles California, who was asking if it was true that someone actually got shot on the beach right in front of vacationers, in the middle of the Cancún Hotel Zone.
Sadly, our editor had to answer: “yes ma’am”.
The travel agent sent a screenshot of another Facebook user who stated her daughter witnessed the incident first hand, and she added that one day before, the young tourist was approached by a guy selling different types of drugs right on the beach, where apparently there is absolutely no security or police surveillance.
For most people (nationals and foreigners), it is hard to believe that people are actually getting shot right on the beach of Cancun’s hotel zone, where it used to be unthinkable that these types of extremely violent situations could take place.
Regardless if this was a dispute between two street vendors, drug dealers or whatever, the fact is that a man was murdered right in front of dozens of tourists in a type of episode that is getting more and more common in Cancun’s tourist area. And unless local authorities adopt strong precautions, this situation could get out of control, resulting in the death of innocent people and obviously in detriment of this important tourist destination.
