Guanajuato’s Tourism Facebook page ranked first in Mexico

GUANAJUATO, Gto. – On July 26, during the ‘Consultation, Research and Sustainable Development of Tourism’ forum organized by the University of Guanajuato (UG), the State Secretary of Tourism, Fernando Olivera Rocha announced that the Ministry of Tourism of Guanajuato facebook page was ranked first overall in Mexico.

The touristic profile reached 520,804 “Likes”, overcoming Michoacan’s Ministry of Tourism facebook page, which led the national ranking.

Olivera Rocha stated “today, we have managed to overcome other facebook pages that had been leaders for several years, such as Michoacan. This is important for us, our page is number one for the first time in history, we are seeing how our work is paying off”.

At the event, the secretary highlighted the increasing numbers of tourism in Guanajuato, and also pointed out 1 billion pesos (53 million USD) were invested in tourism infrastructure during 2015.

Olivera Rocha concluded that the last year, Guanajuato achieved an economic impact of 74.6 billion pesos, divided in:

  • Accommodation with 25%
  • Food and beverages with 16%
  • Tickets for events and shopping, with 13 % and 12% respectively .

And so far 2016, there are 4,000 travel agents certified in Guanajuato.

On another issue, regarding the new master’s degree in Development of Heritage and Tourism (Maestría en Desarrollo del Patrimonio y Turismo) at the Guanajuato University, the state official said that this sector has certain characteristics that need to be analyzed and investigated, such as emergence of new business; use of technology; immediacy, efficiency and progress of services.
