Alumnus Brian Orozco ’18 has been awarded one of three prestigious Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowships. The fellowship provides $19,000 to support students in the visual and fine arts — including art history, conservation, studio art, and photography — for travel and living expenses outside the United States.

Orozco will spend next year producing a body of fine art photographs in Mexico City, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, and Guanajuato, Mexico of the family members of migrants who have stayed behind in Mexico. He will also create an archive of family snapshots, made by these Mexican families, of their loved ones who have immigrated to the United States. He is currently a Public Programs Fellow at the Brooklyn Museum; after competing his fellowship year, he plans to pursue an M.F.A. in photography.

Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowships are funded by income from the Mortimer and Sara Hays Endowment at Brandeis University.
