Canada responds to AMLO’s pause: ‘Our investors are concerned about judicial reform’
The Government of Canada stressed that it ‘fully’ respects the sovereignty of the people of Mexico, after criticism from President López Obrador.
The Government of Canada assured this Wednesday, August 28, that it has no intention of interfering in the internal politics of Mexico after the “pause” of relations announced by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
However, it stressed that Canadian investors have expressed their concern about the constitutional reforms proposed by President López Obrador, which include the election by popular vote of judges and ministers and the disappearance of seven autonomous bodies.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada assured on Wednesday, August 28th, that Ottawa “fully respects Mexican sovereignty and has no intention of intervening in the internal affairs of Mexico.”
“Canada deeply values its relationship with Mexico, a key ally, neighbor, and friend,” the spokesperson added, noting that Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly recently concluded a “successful” bilateral visit to the Latin American country.
The Justin Trudeau administration also assured that “Canadian investors in Mexico have expressed concern about proposed constitutional reforms that could impact the trust they rely on to advance trade and investment with Mexico.”
