Sheinbaum receives the Baton of Command in an Indigenous ceremony
Claudia Sheinbaum, president of Mexico, received the baton of command from a representative of 70 indigenous peoples and the Afro-Mexican people.
With an emotional hug, the incoming President listened to words in the native dialect of one of the women participating in the ceremony, before receiving the baton.
The ceremony was made up only of women from indigenous ethnicities, the prayers were directed to each of the cardinal points to ask for good fortune for Sheinbaum in her next term.
At the time of the delivery of the baton of command, a representative of the Indigenous peoples explained that it is “a symbol of the energy, strength, and collective wisdom of the peoples of deep Mexico. Our grandmothers and grandfathers taught us that the baton of command represents political and spiritual power, as well as the most sacred part of our worldview, it is a symbol of communal power, of the noble gift of serving the people and of doing justice.”
The woman also explained what the baton of command implies in the exercise of power in Indigenous communities.
“With its symbolism, we, the authorities, govern by obeying the people, exercising power, fulfilling the sacred mandate of our assemblies, a space where our voices come together and we make decisions collectively,” she said.
Finally, she handed over the baton of command, as a sign of her support for Sheinbaum’s government, as well as her confidence that Indigenous peoples will have justice and dignity in her six-year term.
