The mayor of San Miguel de Allende confirmed the incident and strongly condemned the situation of violence in the state.
The wine-growing businessman was the victim of a direct attack in the industrial zone of Parque Amistad Bajío, in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato. Vega was the owner of the Cuna de Tierra vineyard, in the municipality of Dolores Hidalgo in the same state.
The Secretariat of Security and Peace reported that, according to the municipal authority, the crime occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at kilometer 37 of the Celaya-Querétaro highway; agents of the National Guard arrived at the scene, acting as first responders.
The State Attorney General’s Office reported that the homicide occurred near the area known as El Trébol. It did not give details of the mechanics of the events or progress in the investigation. On November 30, also in El Trébol, a commando killed eight men, including two firefighters and a paramedic.
Ricardo Vega was a member of the Guanajuato Wine Producers Association, recognized as a leader in the winegrowers’ guild and promoter of that industry.
The mayor of San Miguel de Allende, Mauricio Trejo Pureco, was the one who announced the murder of the businessman and warned that insecurity reigns in Guanajuato.
“I deeply regret and strongly condemn the cowardly murder of Ricardo Vega, owner of the Cuna de Tierra vineyard,” he wrote on social media.
In his message, which he addressed to the governor of Guanajuato, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, he stated that his security strategy must yield results now.
The state’s Wine Producers Association regretted the death of Vega Cámara, whom it defined as a visionary and precursor of viticulture in the area.
The organization thanked him for his invaluable contribution to the development of Guanajuato wines and his tireless dedication to promoting our wine culture. She also wished a speedy resignation to his family, friends, and loved ones.
“Ricardo used to say that life is too short not to enjoy a good wine; his life was a reflection of this philosophy,” the Association added.
On her social networks, Cinthya Ducoing, also a wine producer from Guanajuato, shared images next to Ricardo Vega and expressed pain at his departure.
“Today it deeply hurts me to say goodbye to Ricardo Vega, an exceptional man who left an indelible mark on my life and the wine industry in Guanajuato.”
She said that Vega Cámara, in addition to promoting viticulture in the region, also “transformed arid lands into vineyards full of history.”
The San Miguel Times sends its deepest condolences to his family and friends, RIP Don Ricardo Vega Camara.
