Did you know that San Francisco de Campeche is the only walled city in Mexico? This capital of the state of Campeche is recognized for the exceptional state of conservation of its historical heritage, which is why it was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
In 2025, San Francisco de Campeche has been selected by CNN as one of the best destinations to visit in its annual list, which includes 25 places around the world. Among the destinations mentioned are Almaty, Kazakhstan, a place little explored by Mexican tourists; sites in India; and Europe, cities like Chemnitz, Germany.
Regions such as Eswatini and the province of Mpumalanga, in South Africa, also appear on CNN’s list. The list avoids the traditional destinations that usually top these rankings, such as Paris, France, or in the case of Mexico, iconic places like Cancun. In addition, it includes other locations in Latin America, such as Bolivia, which appears together as a country, and Mendoza, in Argentina.
San Francisco de Campeche is the only place in Mexico that appears on this list. It was chosen because it represents “a different Mexico.” CNN contrasts it with big cities, luxury destinations with resorts, and places frequented by foreigners, like San Miguel de Allende.
The city’s location, on the western side of the Yucatan Peninsula, is one of its best attractions. Additionally, Campeche is one of only two states in Mexico that has received the highest security rating from the United States Department of State. These aspects are mentioned in CNN’s list of the 25 best destinations to visit during 2025.
Among other reasons that make the capital of Campechana unique and led it to be selected is its gastronomy, which is attractive to seafood lovers. They also rave about its historic architecture and outdoor experiences at nearby locations, such as cenotes and beaches.
Other factors that make San Francisco de Campeche a unique destination are its tropical forests and its impressive Mayan ruins. If you have not yet had the opportunity to get to know this fascinating city, 2025 is the perfect year to do so. Be sure to visit the Edzná Archaeological Zone, the Malecón (promenade), the Cultural Center Palace, the majestic Cathedral, and the Campeche Archaeological Museum in the San Miguel Fort.
