On Friday, July 22, from 6 to 9pm, Galería Casa Diana will host a cocktail party to inaugurate José Angel Pahuamba’s exhibit, “Super Heroes and Masked Wrestlers.” The collection consists of a series of acrylic and mixed media paintings in various formats. “Super Heroes and Masked Wrestlers” portrays fun representations of fictitious characters from the artist’s childhood, modified by his perception and imagination.

José Ángel Pahuamba Velázquez is originally from Michoacán, where he currently lives and works. He studied fine arts in the Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes, a branch of the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo (UMSNH). He has received numerous prizes and honorable mentions such as the acquisition prize for “Lluvia en el Bosque” in 2012 and honorable mention in the Bienal Nacional Alfredo Zalce 2011.
Pahuamba has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions including the “Cien, Doscientos” show in Galería Pórtico in Michoacán 2010 and “Territorios” in the Instituto de Cultura Mexico in San Jose, Costa Rica 2005. Pahuamba has also taught various workshops in the International Jefferson High School in Morelia, Michoacan, and has participated in important conferences all over the country.
He works in watercolor, woodcut, and mixed media. His style goes from entirely abstract to figurative, but it also includes pieces that fall somewhere in between. Also to be exhibited will be works from the gallery’s permanent artists: Pedro Friedeberg, Carmen Gutiérrez, Diana Friedeberg, Deborah Turbeville, Raymundo González, Theo Toy, Maike Kreichgauer, MOGH, and Miguel Ángel Morales.
