Querétaro based TAR, has become the leading regional air carrier in all of Mexico, due to the growth in the number of passengers during the first six months of 2016, with 178 percent more seats, compared to the same period last year.
With only two years of operations, TAR airlines is overcoming Baja California’s Aero Calafia, and Aeromar, which has 29 years of experience in Mexico.
This airline is a subsidiary of Mafra Group, owned by Mexican investors and presided by Miguel Franco from Querétaro. The company focuses on different industries such as water crafts, advertising and publicity, retirement homes, waste recycling and air carriers.
Rodrigo Vasquez, TAR’s CEO, explained that their strategy is based on serving as many Mexican cities as possible, but not during high demand hours. With 1.5 percent of the Mexican market, TAR operates Embraer 145 aircrafts, with 50-seat capacity.
“In the last 12 months, we have gone from having 3 to 10 aircrafts, and by the end of 2017, we hope to reach 26 units. We are talking about an investment of 65 million dollars”. Vasquez said.
In the first half of 2016, TAR transported 286,740 passengers, which represents a 178 percent more than last year’s first semester; while 30 year old Aeromar only transported 246,320 during the same period of time.
NEW INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS
“In the coming months we will be obtaining permission from international aeronautical authorities to fly abroad, we will expand our fleet in 2017 with Embraer 175 and 190 aircrafts, and we seek to gain 5 percent of the Mexican market in the next 5 years” said Vasquez.
“TAR AIRLINES” LOW COST AND NEW ROUTES
According to Victor Hugo Valdes, specialist of aviation for Mexico’s Anahuac University, the potential of air carriers such as TAR is focused on changing the low penetration of the traveling market, considering that the average Mexican citizen travels by air once per year, low fare alternatives such as TAR could help to increase their travel frequency, by responding with the following strategy: “Low cost and New routes”:
For example, the air fee from Puerto Vallarta to Bajío with TAR is $1,250 pesos; while Aeromexico does not offer a direct flight between these two destinations, you need to make a stop in Mexico City, the travel time is much longer and the cost much higher ($2, 850 pesos).
