General Pedro Felipe Gurrola Ramírez announced on Monday October 3, that more than one thousand military will work to reinforce the security in Guanajuato, mainly in the municipalities of León, Irapuato and Celaya.
This statement was made one day after a military officer died during a clash with an armed group in the municipality of Comonfort.
During the interview, Gurrola Ramírez underlined that the Mexican army is coming to cooperate with the State and Municipal police, aiming to resolve the current situation in Guanajuato state, which includes the railroad robberies, clandestine oil taps and a high number of executions, which is increasing due to what the officer called a “cockroach effect”.
Before inauguration ceremony of the Festival Internacional Cervantino (FIC), the Commander of the twelfth Military Region, installed in Irapuato, said: “ No drug cartel has established permanently in Guanajuato, nor dominates this region”.
“These criminal organizations are basically dedicated to drug dealing. Due to the current economic development in Guanajuato, drug dealers move to the big cities such as León or Celaya, where the purchasing power is higher,” argued the Commander.
Gurroa stated: “This security support in Guanajuato came as a request by Governor, Miguel Marquez Marquez. We have people in the army especially trained to combat the oil robbery at the Pemex pipelines in the states of Guanajuato, Puebla and Tlaxcala”.
The Mexican Army Commander lamented the death of a soldier during a shootout in the municipality of Comonfort, and concluded: “at this point, we have an ongoing operation in collaboration with State, Municipal and Federal police officers, in order to find the perpetratorsof this brutal murder”.
