LEÓN, Gto.- On Sunday February 10th, members of the environmentalist organization “Déjame plantado” from León Guanajuato, made an energetic call to all Leon’s residents in order to meet at “Hidalgo Park”, to protest against the authorities for the trees brought down by the municipal government.
“We request an urgent meeting with the municipal authorities to inform us what is going on, which species of trees are being removed and we demand a logic justification of this criminal act” said Celia Garza Vera, a prominent member of the “Déjame plantado” organization”
This group of course expressed their disagreement and total rejection, stating that these actions damage the health of the local population, as in recent months the city has recorded poor air quality, and obviously, less trees mean less oxygen.
“Déjame plantado” revealed that 15 trees have already been cut as part of the first phase, and they are afraid that this situation will keep going on, threatening more than 500 trees in this emblematic park.
“We need an explanation, and we sincerely feel that authorities will not be able to justify their regrettable actions,” said Celia Garza Vera.
“We have demanded an answer from the authorities, but so far we don’t have received any response”, she complained.
The environmental activist also expressed that, “many trees are currently ill, but instead of cutting them down, we propose that the authorities help them to heal, the municipal government needs to take care them, starting with good phytosanitary conditions”.
“As we were checking out the area, we realized that there are trees affected by mistletoe, these specimens need to be treated by specialists, besides there is a deficit of green areas in our municipality” Garza Vera concluded.
“The Municipal Planning Institute of León (Implan) said: “The recommendation of the World Health Organization is to have nine square meters of green area per resident, and our data shows that, in León there are only three meters of green area per resident, which means a significant deficit”.
“Déjame plantado” members demand the León municipal government to listen to their recommendations and stop cutting down trees.
