Querétaro will celebrate the 486 anniversary of its founding with the traditional Santiago de Querétaro festival, which will be held from July 25 to 30 with 10 different venues and more than 70 free admission artistic and cultural activities .
Through the Municipal Culture Institute of the Ministry of Human and Social Development (Instituto de Cultura Municipal, de la Secretaría de Desarrollo Humano y Social), 657 artists will participate during the festivities, including professors, historians and researchers.
Children’s workshops will be held in order to encourage the participation of all family members.
Beatriz Marmolejo Rojas, head of the Human and Social Development Secretariat, said that: “Queretaro residents are fortunate to have important history and traditions that they must preserve, giving them a sense of belonging and pride to be Queretanos.”
She also pointed out that a fundamental part of these traditions is the commemoration of the foundation of the city established on July 25, 1531. She recalled that Queretaro is one of the oldest cities in Mexico featuring colonnial streets, buildings and monuments that are world heritage.
Marmolejo Rojas said that during the 486th anniversary of the founding of the city, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy cultural, artistic, musical and other diverse programs and shows.
The inauguration of the festival will be held on Wednesday, July 26 at 8:00 p.m. with a concert downtwon, but the festivities will officially start on Tuesday July 25 with the guard of honor to the apostle Santiago and the delivery of preseas (Acknowledgments) during a solemn session at town hall.
There wll be different venues such as: Plaza Fundadores, Jardín Guerrero, City Theater, Zenea Garden, Teatro de la República, Rosalío Solano Cineteatro, Alameda Hidalgo Perimeter Gallery, Rosario Sánchez de Lozada Municipal Gallery, the former Railway Station and Hercules.
“We recognize that our land has been home to events of great historical importance for the country, especially during the war of independence, as Queretaro witnessed the defeat of imperialism and the creation of the 1917 Constitution, among other events which highlight the relevance of this great city, ” Beatriz Marmolejo concluded.
The director of the Municipal Culture Institute, Algeria Valdez López, explained that among the activities that will be included are music, dance, theater, conferences, cinema and exhibitions, as well as workshops and conferences imparted by municipal cultural authorities and librarians.
