San Miguel Arts & Crafts export figures decline this year

In San Miguel de Allende, the arts & crafts industry is the second largest export sector in the municipality with sales of more than 6.1 million pesos(315,000 USD) a year. For the most part, exports go to the United States, Canada and Europe.

However, the sector registered a decrease of 22% with respect to the previous year. The sector of handicrafts, gifts, decoration and furniture achieved in 2014 exports for 7,993,332 pesos (; but in 2015 the figure went down to 6,197,583 pesos.

The top export sector in San Miguel is the agri-food industry with 30,385,272 pesos worth of exports during 2015.

The city occupies the 16th place among the exporting municipalities of Guanajuato. It registers 40.17 million pesos of international sales and a growth of 38.13% total.

Zonia Torres, director of Economic Development and Tourism said that the craft industry in San Miguel de Allende has a great tradition, especially in metalwork, mentioning “the use of both copper and brass sheet.”
