Querétaro is the main producer of sparkling wine in Mexico, as well as the main exporter.
With an annual production of 1.5 million bottles (50% of the total production of wine in the state) the entity is placed at the forefront in this industry nationwide, said the president of the Association of Viticulturists of Querétaro (AVQ), Hanz Duer.
The positioning of the state is due more to the fact that it houses one of the 25 wine houses that Freixenet has in the world.
“In sparkling wine, the main producer is Freixenet, which is one of the largest wine companies in the world, they have 25 facilities worldwide and Queretaro is one of them” he said.
Also, he added, Queretaro is the main exporter of Mexican sparkling wine, with shipments to the United States and Japan, among many other countries.
In addition to Finca Sala Vivé by Freixenet, local producers have also ventured into sparkling wine production, along with the other varieties of wine produced in the state.
“However, we also have white, rosé, and red wine, not just sparkling… We also have a category of sweet wines with a very important market in Querétaro, we have a very wide range of different wines produced in the state” said the businessman.
In the state of Queretaro, 150 wine labels are produced.
The AVQ associates 28 wine houses, located mainly in the municipalities of Ezequiel Montes, Tequisquiapan, El Marqués, among others.
The Route of Art, Cheese and Wine is integrated by 28 producing wineries, 11 artisanal cheese factories and more than 4,850 hotel rooms. On an annual basis, the route receives 800,000 visitors.
The president of the School of Artisanal Wine, Eusebio Goyeneche González, pointed out that Queretaro has a strategic geographical location as an advantage, which makes it attractive compared to the offer that Baja California represents as the main producer of wine in the country.
“During the seven years of operations of the school, the main objective has been to increase the culture of wine, as well as the training of specialized personnel in order to motivate the growth of this industry in the region”, said Goyeneche Gonzalez.
“In this context, Querétaro is the headquarters of the Wine Selection of Mexico of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, which took place from 7 to 12 August”, he continued.
The 2018 edition was named “Following the path of the vine: the Bajío, Querétaro 2018“.
Currently, there is a deficit of winemakers in the state. Therefore, within the framework of the contest, it is expected to sign a collaboration agreement with the Autonomous University of Baja California, which is currently working on the design of a degree in Enology.
