Mérida Yucatán.- Two residents of Mérida will be imprisoned for at least four months for possession of 569 psychotropic pills and two  peyote cactus specimens, which contain the hallucinogen substance known as mescaline .

The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) informed on Thursday March 14th, that while searching a roperty in south of Mérida, they seized 569 psychotropic units in pharmaceutical presentations and two plants of trimethoxyphemethylamine, known as peyote mescaline.

The FGR specified that the drug clobenzorex and the narcotic methylphenylate were seized as they were being illegally  sold by these two women. Clobenzorex is used as an appetite suppressant. While Methylphenidate is used as part of a treatment program to control the symptoms of attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity in children and adults.

Mescaline is a hallucinogen obtained from a small, spineless cactus, called peyote. Specifically, it is extracted from small appendages that grow on the upper part of the cactus.

The two women, not identified by the FGR, were arrested when federal and state police complied with a search warrant in an estate in Colonia Nueva Kukulkan in southern Mérida.

The FGR reported that both women were presented before the Control Judge of the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Yucatan. The judge declared that their arrest was legal and linked the two women to criminal proceedings for the crime of possession of drugs for sale.

In addition, the judge imposed pretrial detention and gave the FGR four months to close the complementary investigation.
