AMLO welcomes Xavier Bettel Prime Minister of Luxembourg at Palacio Nacional

Xavier Bettel the prime minister of Luxembourg, is openly gay and was received by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico’s Palacio Nacional on Tuesday April 9th. Before becoming prime minister, Bettel was mayor of the city of Luxembourg, and had participation in his country’s Congress and Municipal Council.

In addition to Xavier Bettel being openly gay, his husband, Belgian architect Gauthier Destenay, holds the title of “First Knight” of Luxembourg. And this couple carried out the first gay wedding of a Prime Minister in the European Union.

For the local LGBT community, the fact that the Mexican government does not show any kind of prejudice on the sexual orientation of this Prime Minister is a clear sign that the AMLO administration will not be limited by moralisms when dealing with political and legal issues. And socially implies that homosexual people are far from the typical stereotypes observed by most Mexicans with a macho education.

Xavier Bettel and Gauthier Destenay say ‘I do’ on May 15th, 2015 (Luxembourg Times – Archives)
