During the last edition of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, the Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, accompanied by the Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato, Juan José Álvarez Brunel, welcomed from Croatia the next edition of the winemaking event based in Mexico for 2024.

Istria, Croatia.- Sunday May 14, halfway through the tastings of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in the red and white category, the mariachi sounded while the news was announced that Guanajuato will be the official venue of the international contest in June of 2024. This was presented by the Constitutional Governor of the State of Guanajuato, Mexico Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo and the Secretary of Tourism of Guanajuato, Juan José Álvarez Brunel together with the organizers: Baudouin Havaux, director of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles; Quentin Havaux, director of Vinopres, Carlos Borboa, director of México Selection and Croatian government authorities to announce that the next international event will be in Guanajuato.

Previously, said contest has been held twice in our country: México Selection in 2017 and 2021. This is how Guanajuato is once again the focus of attention for the wine world, but now, with an international character where it will house wines and international jury.

After this statement in an interview the secretary of tourism Álvarez Brunel tell us about the importance of this exhibition in the state of Guanajuato.

Guanajuato will be the focus of world attention for a few days, what will they do with the jury of the contest?

“ Without a doubt, the contest is very particular. First, because we are going to receive it in the State of Guanajuato, second because those who come are in this oenological field, it will make specialized journalists, sommeliers, international buyers, researchers and representatives of wineries interested in knowing the region visit us.”

“We know that the contest is closed, but somehow, we are going to take advantage so that in terms of tourism we can offer and share what we have around us in our state: culture, gastronomy and, of course, shopping, without a doubt the visits that could be given to archaeological zones, to our magical towns, heritage cities.”

Viticulture in Guanajuato is already known in Mexico, what plans do you have for visitors to learn about it?

“We will take advantage so that our tourism value chain has the opportunity to benefit from this wine development program that not only has the theme of the field, the plant, the elaboration, the labels, its commercialization, but also A very important factor that is thus established in the law for the promotion of wine-growing activity is wine tourism.”

Today we already have more than 25 vineyards that are offering some wine experience, and in this sense, also the fact that more and more we are making our highly recognized labels known in different international competitions, more than 200 labels have had this recognition and that way of the tourist link allows us to be able to show you this part.”

“The governor recently launched the wine route in Valle de la Independencia, Guanajuato Mexico and that it is a great integrator because there they are helping the different tourism actors that are found on the road sections. We are not touching the urban areas of these 77 kilometers that comprise the municipalities of Comonfort, San Miguel Allende, Dolores Hidalgo and San Diego de la Unión. And that is the important part of the success we are having in the wine production part.”

Is Guanajuato exporting wine?

“ We produce a little over a million liters of wine. We like it so much, we feel so proud of our wine, that we are drinking it in Guanajuato, we are drinking it in Mexico. We do have cases of wineries for export, such as Cuna de Tierra, one of the oldest wineries, you will find them in duty free at all airports in the world. It is something that makes us proud.”

Any new project?

“ We launched the “Valle de la Independencia” wine route, characteristic of Guanajuato, the place where the country’s independence was forged. We want you to refer to all these vineyards that we have in Guanajuato, to all these wines that are being made on these routes.”

After the announcement and the last day of tasting, the government of Guanajuato offered a meal for organizers and tasters with a menu created with Guanajuato ingredients such as dried meat from Valladolid, chilaca pepper, chamoy, strawberries and pressed pork rinds.
