San Miguel residents participate in citizen consultation for “Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan”

San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato — On Sunday April 30, hundreds of San Miguel de Allende residents participated in the first citizen consultation organized by the Municipal Administration in order to approve an ambitious new mobility plan for the municipality.

The plan aims to give priority to pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation and finally private vehicles, strengthening the well-being of all San Miguel inhabitants and boosting the different economic sectors of San Miguel, such as tourism and other types of businesses.

Gonzalo González, Secretary of the City Council, said that: “this exercise of citizenship sets a precedent not only for San Miguel, but for the whole state of Guanajuato. Hundreds of residents expressed their opinion in order to decide new sustainable public policies that should be followed to improve mobility conditions in our municipality.”

A total of twenty polls were installed across the muncipality, both in rural and urban areas. All participants had to show their voter’s credentials to verify their address in San Miguel de Allende.

During the civic consultation a total of 20 topics were discussed in relation to urban mobility, since local authorities are convenced that it’s really necessary to elaborate an innovative mobility plan for San Miguel de Allende.

The second and third points explained that: “For the well-being of the people of San Miguel, it is neccesary to improve and increase pedestrian pathways, and more parking spaces are necessary to satisfy the needs of thousands of visitors that flood the streets of our beloved hometown, that will boost the local economy”.

As part of the consultation, policies regarding efficient urban public transport and rental services were also analyzed. New schedules for public transportation were considered too at the Town Hall plenary session, for the benefit all San Miguel residents and visitors.

“With this consultation, the municipal administration shows their great interest to be open to new ideas and listen to all citizens, because we are convinced that this is the best formula to make good effective public policies, by having the support of all citizens”, concluded Secretary Gonzalo González.
