GUANAJUATO, Gto.- Mauricio Pantoja, along with his team-partner ‘Titán’, in addition to the team formed by ‘Akela’ and Christian Frausto, all members of the Silao Fire Department K-9 Unit, participated in the rescue works in Mexico City just a few days ago.

In fact, these rescuers are offering to provide training for companies that require security, first aid, fire or rescue courses in exchange for donations to the Silao Fire Department.

They explained that working gear and tools wear out with daily work, such as first aid supplies, jackets, boots, gloves, shovels, etc., and mentioned that the corporation currently needs new ropes to be able to make vertical rescues.

SELECTION OF K-9 UNIT TEAMS

On an interview with Periodico Correo, Pantoja said that only one out of ten dogs that are trained remains in the corporation, in addition the preparation lasts eighteen months.

He said that the bond with the trainer starts from the first months of the puppy’s life, and from the sixth month on, the obedience course begins with a very strict control.

Pantoja said that both the coach and the dog always work together, so they know what happens to each other.

He clarified that any dog can be a K-9 agent, however, he noted that there are breeds that have a more developed sense of smell, but it mostly “depends on the love and dedication you give your dog.”

Regarding his experience during the 2017 earthquakes, he said that people in Mexico City demonstrated a strong sense of solidarity, civilians helped carrying buckets of rubble, bringing wooden supports, providing free food, bottles of water, etc.

He recalled that one lady brought them tamales, and many others just gave them a smile, that in such a tragic situation, was indeed very helpful.

Finally, Mauricio Pantoja recognized the work of K-9 agents “Titan” and “Akela” who have truly raised the image of the state of Guanajuato nationwide.
