The same day that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that the homicide rate decreased throughout the country during the first month of his administration, 25 people were violently killed in the state of Guanajuato.

On Thursday Jan. 3rd, president Andrés Manuel López Obrador released a series of statistics that allegedly support the fact that crime has decreased during the first month of his government.

However, violent events marked the day in the state of Guanajuato. After having recorded a decrease in homicides during the first two days of the year (3 and 5 deaths on the first and second of January, respectively),  Thursday January became one of the most violent days in the history of this Mexican state, when 25 violent, crime related deaths were registered.

The most violent incident was recorded at Valle de Santiago, where six people were killed by a group of armed men in a grain warehouse. While in Pénjamo five more were gunned down and their bodies thrown into a dump. One more dead body was located on a dirt road in the community of El Talón. In addition, a woman was executed in Dolores Hidalgo.

An attack in a tortillería in the Tarimoro community added three more dead to the count. While a drive by shooting at an electrical workshop in Celaya, left two more dead – apparently two brothers – and two wounded who had to be taken to the hospital.

A fight in Silao, which involved firearms, left the two more dead. Leon contributed with one more death, as a man got stabbed in broad daylight. One more man was executed at the community of Jaral del Progreso and his body was found by the Río Lerma river bank.

In Acámbaro, a dead and wounded man is the result of a shooting in the Loma Bonita neighborhood. Later in Salamanca, a group of armed men attacked  a body shop killing two and leaving three injured (including two women).

In addition, municipal troops found the body of a man of approximately 30 years of age, on the dirt road that connects the communities of Cerrito de las Huertas with El Guayabo.

It should be noted that the death toll could have been higher, since not all attacks left mortal victims.

At 5 o’clock in the afternoon on the very same day, there was a shootout outside Acámbaro General Hospital, when a group of gunmen traveling in a white VW Jetta opened fire at a van guarded by military and state police troops.

At 7:30 p.m., a vehicle of the Municipal Police of Pénjamo was involced in a car chase at La Estrella community, gunshots were fired.

Neither of these last two events left mortal victims.
