The city of San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico’s Guanajuato state, has been included in this year’s Best of the Best Popular Destinations — Mexico category at this year’s Tripadvisor® 18th annual Travelers’ Choice® Awards, as announced this morning.

In addition to the city, which is nicknamed “the Heart of Mexico,” making the Best of the Best lists, local accommodations properties Casa Misha, Casa 1810 Hotel Boutique, Hotel Boutique Nena, Hacienda El Santuario, Casa Rosada Hotel, Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, Live Aqua Urban Resort San Miguel de Allende, and Villa Mirasol Hotel were also awarded.

“We more than welcome this uplifting news as a sign of the incredible experiences people have when they visit San Miguel de Allende,” said Laura Torres-Septien, President of the San Miguel de Allende Tourism Board. “This has been a difficult year for tourism, and we proudly join the local, national, and international tourism industry in the celebration of these kind awards and look forward to a future of bucket list experiences coming true for our visitors.”

Playa del Carmen, Cancún, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, Tulum, Zihuatanejo de Azueta, Cozumel and Nuevo Vallarta also made the list of popular Mexican destinations

Travelers’ Choice winners are calculated based on the quality and quantity of the millions of reviews, opinions and ratings collected on Tripadvisor in 2019, prior to the pandemic. Travelers’ Choice winners honored as Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best represent the top 1% of all listing and the most exceptional, highest-rated destinations around the world.

San Miguel de Allende is home to more than 80 hotels, including 30 boutique properties, two hotels approved by the Virtuoso network of travel advisors and two Design Hotels properties. The city also boasts 70 restaurants, three golf courses and dozens of spas and art galleries.

The city has been closed to non-residents since March, as the entire city went under quarantine. However, visitors started to arrive in the city as of July 15 under strict restrictions. San Miguel de Allende was endorsed with the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) “Safe Travels” seal of approval recognizing the implementation of global standardized health and hygiene protocols in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The international seal augments San Miguel de Allende’s own municipal “Health First” certification and reaffirms its place as a leading destination.
