Even though many people are afraid of going to the dentist, it is important to know about all the procedures that this specialist does for the benefit of our oral health. One of them, and maybe one of the scariest ones, is the procedure of exodontia. This is colloquially known as teeth removal. If you need to have a tooth removed, it might be a good idea to learn what is going to happen during the procedure, the complications that could happen, and also the aftercare actions you need to take in order to avoid something bad happening.

What is exodontia?

This procedure is the last resource a dentist uses because it is always a priority to keep all of the patient’s teeth in place. It consists of putting the patient under anesthesia to extract the damaged tooth. Being under sedation avoids causing any pain, discomfort, or nervousness. If the patient feels any discomfort during its extraction, this will be a slight sensation of pressure in the area where the action is happening.

However, if you do need to have one removed, the procedure can be performed by a general dentist or an oral surgeon.

There are many reasons why a patient will need to have teeth removal. The most common one is one the tooth has serious and irreparable damage which can be affecting the general oral health of the patient. Also, in some cases, it will be recommended by the dentist if the position or the form of a growing tooth is causing problems to the denture and can cause later complications to the patient.

What to do before the procedure?

After your doctor takes an X-Ray of your denture, you have to inform him or her if you suffer from one or more of the following:

  • A heart defect
  • Adrenal disease
  • Hypertension
  • Renal disease
  • Problems with your immune system
  • Diabetes
  • Problems with your liver

You must notify your doctor so he can consider them for the type of anesthesia we will use in your extraction.

Types of exodontia

There are two types of exodontia that your dentist might use. These are:

  1. Surgical extractions: In this type of extractions, your dentist will make a small incision in your gum, and, depending on your specific case, he might have to move your bone or cut your tooth to extract it.
  2. Simple extractions: For this exact procedure, you will be sedated with the help of local anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain while the doctor removes the tooth with the help of a tool called “elevator”.

Do not be afraid in case your doctor recommends this procedure to you. It sounds worse than it is and it is a really quick and painless procedure. You must go to a doctor with experience in this type of extraction so you can be sure that nothing will go wrong in the operation and after it.
