The 100% Mexican minicar will plug into the electric current and will be very cheap

Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, head of the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation, presented this Monday morning how Olinia will work, the first assembler of mini electric vehicles developed with Mexican engineering.

During the morning press conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Roberto Capuano, coordinator of the Mexican assembler, explained that three models will be worked on: one for personal mobility, another for neighborhood mobility, and one for last-mile deliveries.

“Olinia’s portfolio of mini vehicles will have an estimated price of between 90 and 150 thousand pesos, depending on the model. This price, coupled with fair financing models, will allow us to make electric mobility accessible to millions of Mexicans,” he said.

The project manager assured that “by the end of the six-year term, our goal is to launch the three models under a company with public investment and private investment, which is economically viable and has long-term prospects.”

“Now, for our first model, President, is that we reach the opening match of the 2026 World Cup at the Azteca Stadium in an Olinia,” he added from the National Palace.

President Claudia Sheinbaum recalled that for this purpose the IPN and the National Technological Institute of Mexico were selected to form the team that will design the units, while Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation, stressed that with this project they seek to achieve the technological transfer between academia, government and the productive sector to be able to start its production.

During the morning press conference at the National Palace, the president pointed out that, although there are already Mexican electric cars, most of their components are imported. In the case of Olinia, more than a car, it will be an assembly plant, with different plants in the country, in which a greater amount of national components will be used gradually.

In turn, Capuano Tripp detailed part of the development plan of the Olinia assembly plant. He explained that in the country, 70 percent of the population lives in urban areas, where 80 percent of daily mobility needs are less than 30 kilometers.

He also pointed out that the mini-vehicle market is the category with the greatest potential volume in the electric mobility segment. In addition, they are a personal mobility solution and an alternative to motorcycles, as well as an alternative to neighborhood mobility replacing motorcycle taxi drivers.

He clarified that the best location for manufacturing is still being evaluated, but he added that production is planned to be carried out with different assembly plants to reduce costs.
