The charming town of Mineral de Pozos, in the state of Guanajuato, is the ideal place to relax and have a great weekend waking through its “western town” type streets.

Located 300 kilometers North of Mexico City, “Mineral de Pozos” was considered for many years as a “ghost town”, nevertheless, not many people are aware that is is used to be one of the most important mining communities in all of Mexico.

At some point in time, 70 thousand people used to live there, and after the mining crisis the population reached only 200 residents. Today, around four thousand citizens inhabit the town.

According to State Tourism authorities, “Mineral de Pozos” has the potential to become the future San Miguel de Allende.

Among the most popular and important festivities of this “Magic Town”, there is the Mariachi Festival, in April, “El Festival de Blues en Pozos” which takes place in June, and the “Papalote Festival” in October.

One of the main attractions that visitors should not miss is the San Pedro Church, which is the most important temple and historic monument in Mineral de Pozos.

Another celebration happens during Easter Thursday, in which at least 100 thousand pilgrims from neighboring communities march into town.

It should be noted that just a few days ago, one of the most surreal spas around in Mexico opened its doors, known as “Spa of Craft Beer Mineral de Pozos”, which offers therapeutic treatments within amber light beer.

The budget per person to visit Mineral de Pozos amounts between $3,000 pesos ($157 USD) and $4,000 pesos ($210 USD) per person for a weekend, including transportation from Mexico City, food and lodging.
