Around 50 people demonstrated in front of Celaya’s Municipal Presidency to demand the cancellation of the bullfights scheduled for the Christmas Fair and next February 5 in this city, they also announced that they are gathering signatures through the internet and in printed formats, to be presented to Mayor Ramon Lemus, during the course of the week.

Likewise, the bishop of the Diocese of Celaya, Benjamín Castillo Plascencia, indicated that any kind of violence must be eradicated, however, he said that society should be more concerned about crimes committed everyday against human beings.

This call was organized by the “Citizen Front Against Animal Abuse”, demanding the municipal government to cancel the mentioned bullfights, and to ban these “atrocious acts” permanently.

Spokeswoman, Elena Cortés, said that each of the five members who make up the front, are in favor of animal life and called for more people to join the cause, in order to make Celaya an “anti-bullfighting city”, seeking to prevent violence against animals and the general population.

They called on the mayor to support the cancellation of these events, stating that at least three municipal officials are encouraging such barbaric activities, pointing to councilman Jorge Montes as one of the main promoters.

The “Citizen Front Against Animal Abuse” stated that it is not necessary to hurt or kill any living being that inhabits the planet and that humans must learn to respect other species that are also part of nature, get along and share the world with them.

Demonstrators described bullfighting as “retrograde and cruel,” and rejected the idea that the murder of an animal could be considered as art and culture: “That is not art, it is a cowardly act of murder against a defenseless and vulnerable creature,” Cortes said.

The spokeswoman stressed that a good number of comments against such events have been posted on the Christmas Fair Website, reason that allows them to ensure that the majority of Celayans are against bullfighting.

Through the portal www.change.org, 1,700 signatures have been collected, under the petition “Ramón Lemus: Say no to bullfighting in Celaya!” The results will be presented to the municipal president during the course of the week,

Besides, the formats for the collection of signatures can also be downladed from the “Citizen Front Against Animal Abuse” Facebook page. The results will be published for all to see.
