On Thursday February 16, personnel of the Secretariat of Citizen Security found and secured a ‘dangerous’ radioactive device that was stolen in the  “Palmillas – Apaseo el Alto” highway, just a few miles from the city of Querétaro.

The robbery of this dangerous material generated a national alert, and immediately the State Units of Civil Protection started an intense search operation in the states of Querétaro, Hidalgo, the state of México, San Luis Potosi and Michoacán in order to find and secure this potentially hazardous radioactive material.

Thursday morning, a suspicious artefact was abandoned in the parking lot of the Costco store located on Queretaro’s “Avenida Tecnológico”, and it was reported to the emergency number 9-1-1, approximately at 8:50 p.m. on Feb. 16.

Civil Protection, Fire Department and Municipal Police personnel arrived on site, and carried out the corresponding security protocols to secure the allegedly radioactive source, classified as highly dangerous, according its labels and codes.

According to security protocols, the personnel have to inform Energy Secretariat authorities that they were about to move this radioactive source; and at the same time, Public Ministry officers also needed to be briefed on the situation.

Local authorities declared that, despite to be radioactive, the material poses absolutely no risk for the population, since the container was perfectly closed and hermetically sealed.
