The first prototypes will be built in San Diego.

The United States has detected about 130 miles (209 kilometers) in which it will not build the promised wall in the border with Mexico. For the first time, the Deputy Commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, Ronald Vitiello, quantified the approximate length of the sector in which “it is not practical nor necessary” to build the wall.

For example, the southern area of Big Bend National Park in Texas, or areas with wide lakes and rivers are locations where the natural barriers will be utilized for they “reduce the flux of people trying to cross,” explained Vitiello.

Regarding the process of construction, it is currently in phase 2 of the bidding process, dedicated to the revision of a “substantial group” of projects which met the requirements. There is still not an official date to know the winners who will pass to the next phase of the construction.

Vitiello calculated that it will be until the end of summer when “between 4 and 8” prototypes will be built in San Diego, California, one beside the other, and which will be funded by the USD$20 million Trump managed to acquire for the project.

A couple of weeks ago, Carla L. Provost, the Acting Chief of the US Border Patrol, announced that it is probable that the construction of the wall will begin in the spring of 2018.

To that end, they expect to have USD$1.600 million, provided that Congress approves the budget. Vitiello remarked that the priority zones are San Diego and Río Grande. The prototypes will only serve to decide which design is the most appropriate for the thousands of miles that Trump wants to build.
